Ch. 1 - Overview of Marketing (Brief History and Mission Statement)

In 1987, Jim and Janice Dougherty founded their first PetSmart originally called PetFood Warehouse in Arizona.  It wasn’t until in 1989 that they officially became known as “PetsMart” and also opened up their first full-service grooming salon and small pet departments. PetSmart is a company that seeks as much opportunities as they can to expand their services within each year. In 1992, during their 50th store opening also came their first permanent in-store adoption center and veterinarian clinic. The 100th store grand opening was in 1994 where in-store pet training was offer for the first time. Along with the growth of PetSmart stores came services like PetsHotels and partnerships with known names like Martha Stewards’. It was in 2000 that PetSmart declared their mission statement, acknowledge as vision statement that with every transaction there must be two customers, the pet and the pet owner who have to have superior service. The PetSmart vision statement is “ To provide Total Lifetime Care SM for every pet, every parent, every time—which we do by offering superior products, unmatched services and superb customer service to pet parents and their pets.” PetSmart is currently focus on their “Smart” solutions instead of the “mart” mentality.
